Nissan X-Trail

Estimated price: Rs 22-24 lakh

The Nissan X-Trail was originally built to give five passengers a comfortable ride. Since its launch, the X-Trail has formed a reputation for its performance and functionality. The new X-Trail looks more promising than the older one and this SUV should be more comfortable and much more fun to drive, without affecting its tough and rugged design.

The new X-trail has maintained its traditional signature styling cues that indicate its off-road capabilities, like the wheel arches which have been extended and the new stylish front grille. The new A-pillar design gives the driver better vision. The new car is also more aerodynamically efficient, reducing the drag – a far cry from its slightly boxier days.

Toyota Fortuner
Expected in Early 2009
Estimated price: 16-18 Lakh
The Land Cruiser is celebrated for being one of the very established genuine off-road vehicles the world has ever seen. And it still is. But this mean, mad machine will be yours only if you have pockets deep enough to shell out over 40 lakh of green paper, and that makes it out of reach of many. Oh, lest I forget, then there is the fuel efficiency, which at 6kmpl does not read very encouraging, does it? So what’s there that Toyota can offer which caters to not-so-rich boys, but lets them have them equally great fun? The answer is lies in the shape of Fortuner.

Looks form an important part of something as big as a SUV and this Japanese does not disappoint. The front looks butch (very uncharacteristic of Japanese) with that strong bonnet line and large head lamps taking the pride place next to the grille. The bonnet scoop looks menacing. The front appears dynamic yet simple. There is certain purpose of the roof rails and those massive wheel arches when you talk about the design aspect. The same purposeful look is retained at the rear with the large tail lamps adding a bit of liveliness.

Toyota Fortuner InteriorThe creature comforts will be bang on and the interior will be pleasing. Very Land Cruiser-ish, the interior will add a smile on your face every time you place yourself on those comfy seats. All the tech abbreviations like ABS, ESP etc will find their way into this 15 lakh plus SUV.

Toyota Fortuner Rear The engine options will include a 2.7L petrol and a 3.0L diesel engines. The VVT-i engine will have 160PS on offer while the 3.0L D-4D will have a thrust of 163PS. Being a Toyota, expect bullet proof reliability and brilliant off-road ability. It has long been coming, but sources say that this time round the rumours of the car getting launched in late 2008 are indeed true. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen. We for one, really hope it does! Toyota… listening?

HSCI has advanced the launch date for its premium hatchback, the Jazz, to June 2009. This is the first time that the company has spoken of concrete launch dates for this car. This much awaited hatch that shares its platform with the new Honda City is expected to be powered by a specially-developed 1200cc engine. Honda had showcased the Jazz as a concept at the Auto Expo 2008 in New Delhi. The sheer volume of inquiries proves that the Jazz is one of the most awaited Hondas to be launched in the country. Honda cars have become well-known to the Indian car buyer over the last decade with their reliability, economy and performance.

Going by the current trend amongst premium hatches, the Jazz will be competing directly with the Skoda Fabia, the yet-to-be-launched Fiat Grande Punto and the Hyundai i20. Honda had declared some time ago that from now on, all Honda cars in India will be powered by VTEC engines. Going by this statement, the new 1.2l engine will be something worth waiting for.

Tata Indigo Vista Coming in Early 2009

Tata Indigo Vista
Expected in Early 2009
Estimated price: Rs 5 - 7 lakh
Tata will roll out the Indigo Vista, based on the platform of its earlier launched Indica Vista. The Indigo Vista diesel will be equipped with the 1.3l multijet engine of the Fiat Linea with Variable Geometric Turbocharger. The petrol variant of the Indigo Vista should be equipped with the 1.4l petrol engine powering the current Indigo.

The 1.3l Fiat multijet engine won’t disappoint in terms of performance and will be a perfect replacement for the current 1.4l turbocharged diesel Tata engine which needs an upgradation. The same Fiat Linea diesel powerplant equipped with a variable geometric turbo will pull the Indigo Vista with its 85 horses. This engine is highly efficient and reliable and produces a torque of 203Nm.

For the petrol variant, Tata continues to use its traditional 1.4l petrol engine which has been powering the Indica and the Indigo since their evolution. The 84bhp engine produces a maximum torque of 110Nm.

Features:

The Indigo Vista will be an extension of the Indica Vista, with both the cars sharing the same platform. The new Indigo Vista will have a longer wheelbase compared to the current Indigo. The car’s interiors will be similar to the Indica Vista with the speedometer at the centre of the dash, rather than the conventional right side.

The car could feature ABS and airbags if the Tata’s export the Indigo Vista. Due to a smaller price tag as compared to other cars, the car won’t be equipped with any other safety feature other than the seatbelts and child lock.

Competitors:

The Indigo Vista will compete with the Suzuki Swift Dzire, Renault Logan, Hyundai Accent, Ford Ikon and the Chevrolet Aveo. The Swift Dzire, the Logan and the Ikon is available in petrol and diesel hearts.

The Fiat 1.3l multijet engine fitted along with the variable geometric turbo which is used in cars which is a notch higher compared to this range (like the Fiat Linea and the new SX4 diesel which will be launched soon) the Indigo Vista could have an edge over the rest in terms of performance.

Maruti Suzuki Splash / Ritz Coming in Early 2009

Maruti Suzuki Splash / Ritz
Expected in Early 2009
Estimated price: 4-5.5 Lakh

Splash all over the place. And I am not talking about some naughty little boy being the brat that he has always been going about his usual business and splashing muddy water everywhere. If all goes well for India’s largest auto-maker, “Splash all over the place” this statement actually can easily come true! Maruti is coming up with Splash / Ritz very soon.

Maruti 800 started the bang and the very beloved Zen carried it forward. Wagon-R chipped in well too later on. And now that Zen has already received a make-over in the form of Estilo, it is the turn of her stable-mate, Wagon-R. Suzuki had showcased a concept based on this car in last year’s Paris Motor Show. Since then a lot of surgery has seen the Splash take its final form, the pictured of which we see here.

The styling is bold and is characterised by the massive headlamps at the fron. The rear is a result of some out-of-the-box thinking and has an inward tilt to it, something that the French have always had in their car designs. It does not look very nice, but every person has a right of thinking!

On the inside, you will notice the parts-sharing that Maruti has mastered now. The dash and the centre console shouts SX4 and Swift at its loudest. The rev counter placed on the dashboard is interesting though.

As far as engines are concerned, you won't be disappointed. A very refined and fuel efficient 1.2L petrol and the award-winning 1.3L multijet (DDiS) diesel engines are planned for the car.

This car is expected to hit Indian roads early 2009.

Hyundai Santa Fe
Expected in Mid 2009
Estimated price: 23-26 Lakh
SUV. One term which not many will associate the Korean giant - Hyundai with. It is that segment of the auto industry which is tantamount with big, brawny, imposing looking machines to which the word ‘car’ will not really be able to do justice.

Hyundai was one of the first to sight the growing potential of the SUV segment and introduced Terracan. Result? It failed to capture the imagination of the buyer. Reason? Price and brand image. Also that it was not really all that great a car! Hyundai thought about it, phased it out, and drove in with another SUV - Tucson. A good car this, which was aimed at beating Honda’s CR-V at its game. Result? The same as Terracan’s.

Hyundai Santa Fe InteriorYou see, Honda has more snob value than Hyundai and at 12-13 lakhs, people become increasingly conscious about their image. Why else do you think that SUVs like Honda CR-V and Ford Endeavour have been selling more than Tucson? Your guess is as good as ours.

Terracan - the Pajero-based SUV is history, and so will be the Tucson when Santa Fe enters India to try its luck at establishing Hyundai with the image of a maker of capable and desirable SUVs.

Hyundai has no dearth of engineering capabilities and is one of the auto-makers which has been upping its ante all this while. The Santa Fe is a testimony to this statement. Alluring, in-yer-face, dynamic, aggressive are adjectives that will fail to describe the curves and flowing desing elements of this SUV.

Hyundai Santa Fe RearIt is big and that imposing grille with an “I-am-bored” look will only add to its character. The gradually rising waistline makes the rear look a little odd though. The flared wheel-arches will house massive wheels. Hyundai plans to import the Santa Fe in India and will offer a delicious 2.2-litre, 148bhp diesel motor which might be tuned to suit Indian fuel quality.

This SUV is going to be as bang up-to-date as the intelligence reports of the US of A! Expect some tension at Honda and Ford camps when Santa Fe comes in during the last quarter of 2008.

Hyundai i20 Diesel Coming in Mid 2009

Hyundai i20 Diesel
Expected in Mid 2009
Estimated price: Rs 5.75 to 7.75 lakh
After the launch of the i20 in the latter half of 2008, Hyundai will now launch the diesel version of its i20. The diesel variant has no changes in looks when compared to its petrol sibling.

Engine:

The diesel variant should be powered by a 1.4l CRDI engine. The 1.4l CRDI engine will produce a power of 74bhp and a torque of 220Nm. The i20 could make more heads turn towards it as it will equipped with a refined diesel engine, with the new generation diesel engines being known for their performance and efficiency.

Hyundai is expected add a VGT (Variable geometry turbocharger) to its diesel engine adding more power to it.

Features:
The top model of i20 will be equipped with airbags and ABS. The car should even feature the 2DIN music system. The interiors of the diesel and the petrol variant will be the same.

Competitors:
The car will compete with the diesel versions of the Maruti Suzuki Swift (DZire also) and the Skoda Fabia. The Swift will be cheaper than i20 and the Fabia is on the expensive side. All the three engines are highly refined and efficient diesel engines.

Fiat Grande Punto Coming in May-June 2009

Fiat Grande Punto
Expected in May-June 2009
Estimated price: 5-7 Lakh

Luca di Montezemolo had reasons to be worried. Not a man to get bogged down, he took the challenge of putting Fiat back from shambles to the peak of the mountain. For this, he needed a car, a good one at that. A car that would appeal to the masses and bring in good numbers. The Grande Punto was just that.

It turned around Fiat’s fortune in a way that could be possible only in dreams. The Grande Punto is the third generation of the Punto and was launched globally in 2005. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Grande Punto has a beautiful body to exhibit with sloped back headlamps and muscular wheel arches which lends it a mean yet attractive look. The rear section integrates well into the bumper and the large tail lamps give added character to the overall stance of the Grande Punto.

The interior are also pleasing and compliment the overall aura of the car. The red coloured display on white dials look funky and the layout of the dash is neat. The ergonomically placed controls and knobs are within easy reach. The steering wheel sports buttons to control the audio system. The interior is airy and comfortable. Build quality is something that Fiat has always been appreciated for and the Grande Punto continues that trend. The plastics inside have a built-to-last feel to them and should age well with time.

The car is likely to offer a choice of three engines. A 1.2L and a 1.4L petrol that pump out 65 and 77 horses respectively will be joined in by a 1.3L multi-jet diesel engine that Fiat is now famed for. This engine is known for its tractable nature and delivers 88PS of power to the front wheels. Our speculation speaks that since a 1.6L motor is already on offer in the Palio Stile, something similar might be presented with the Grande Punto as well. The car will be packed with safety features like ABS and EBD, though the same cannot be said about the airbags as of now.

Entering the action-packed B segment, this car will be at war against names like the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Getz and Chevrolet UV-A. Skoda will do its bit by making things interesting with the launch of the Fabia in this segment. The Grande Punto will roll out from the Ranjangaon facility of Fiat near Pune. The company revealed that it will have high levels of localization for the car and this should help as far as the pricing is concerned.

We suspect that the Fiat Grande Punto will be priced Rs.5 lakh onwards and might see the upper limit close to Rs.7lakh. How close are we in our guess? We’ll find out soon.

Chevrolet Cruze Coming in Mid 2009

Chevrolet Cruze
Expected in Mid 2009
Estimated price: Rs 11.5-13 lakhs
Chevrolet is launching its midsize sedan, the Cruze, across the globe in 2009 replacing the Chevrolet Optra and Daewoo Lacetti, but the Cruze will slot in above the Optra in GM India’s lineup. According to GM, the Cruze "was developed by a global design and engineering team and will be built in multiple locations around the world".
